"In any other country it would have been a cheap hotel room. In China there are no cheap rooms for tourists. The thin Englisman doesn't have much money left. He is travelling on his own, not part of any tour. The clerk is polite and there is a jug of water and a clean glass on the beside table. The thin Englishman takes the room and signs the register: John Parsons. He feels tired and goes straight to bed. The next morning he goes out for a walk round the town. When he comes back to the room at first everything looks the same.'"
