Sacher-Masoch: Venus in Furs

Content:

The first widely known work of masochism - by the writer whose name became synonymous with that sexual fetish. "The story of how [Severin] first aroused [Wanda von Dunajew's] dangerous passion for domination, how he entered into the contract to become hers completely, submitted to brutal floggins, and was finally cast aside after she had taken another lover, even though she had adored Severin to start with, forms a tale as extraordinary as any to be found in literature." "'One day my parents made a journey to town. My aunt determined to take advantage of their absence to attack my person. Clad in her fur-lined kazabaika she entered my room, followed by the cook, the kitchen maid and the little puss I had scorned. Without a word said, they seized me, and, despite my resistance, tied my feet and my arms, then, with a malicious laugh, my aunt rolled up her sleeves and started to beat me with a large switch, so hard as to draw blood and, at length, in spit of my courage, I yelled, wept and implored mercy. Then she untied me, but I had to kneel down before her to thank her for the correction and kiss her hand.

'Imagine, then, what happened to the languid dreamer that was I. Under the switch of that handsome and lascivious woman, who, in her fur jacket, seemed like an incensed queen, the temptation of woman was aroused in me for the first time and, from that moment, my aunt appeared to be the most attractive woman that God had ever created.'"
