Quote from this book
"The Shunyo Yubi Ningyo by Keisai Eisan (in about 1830) is a catalogue of the love-making positions attributed to several couples whose adventures are the pretext for the work. But one finds in it nothing much except stereotypes, completely lacking in the exuberant imagination that is characteristic of Tantrism. Certain situations depend on gymnastics which are complicated but rather unlikely, after all, to lead to an orgasm, or even a shared pleasure. Others simple represent symbols, the interpretation of which depends on a coherent philosophy of the being. It stands at the opposite end of the scale from the floating world. The Ukiyo-é, which Utamaro took upon himself to extol, by publishing in 1788 Uta Makura (Little Pillow Poems), whose twelve plates constitute a masterpiece: 'the remarkable expression'. observes R Lane (Die erotische Kunst, Hamburg 1979) 'of sexual phantasms and anxieties'."
