"In 49 (64 per cent) of the 76 societies other than our own for which information is available, homosexual activities of one sort or another are considered normal and socially acceptable for certain members of the community. The most common form of institutionalized homosexuality is that of the berdache or transvestite. The berdache is a male who dresses like a woman, performs women's tasks, and adopts some aspects of the feminine role in sexual behavior with male partners. Less frequently a woman dresses like a man and seeks to adopt the male sex role. Approved Forms for Men In some societies the man who assumes the feminine role is regarded by other members of the community as a powerful shaman. Among the Siberian Chukchee such an individual puts on women's clothing, assumes feminine mannerisms and may become the "wife" of another man. The pair copulate per anum, the shaman always playing the feminine role. In addition to the shaman "wife", the husband usually has another wife with whom he indulges in heterosexual coitus. The shaman in turn may support a feminine mistress; children are often born of such unions. The shaman enjoys considerable prestige and has a position of power in the community. He is believed to have been involuntarily transformed by supernatural power and some men fear being thus changed even though the procedure might enhance their social standing." pp 130-1, Chapter on Homosexual Behavior, reference omitted Secondhand booksellers |
