"In a truly Proustian way did my interest in Proust begin - through insomnia. A physician had told me how to ease my wakeful hours; not to worry if I could not sleep, he said, but to do some constructive work or engage in an absorbing study. The quiet of the deep night was conducive to contemplative reading. But I found that books were ending by the time I had become most deeply engrossed. A dear friend was inspired. He gave me Remembrance of Things Past in Scott-Moncrieff's marvelous translation. 'This,' he said, 'will put off the ending for a long, long time.' It did! For five years. Not really; for the end is not yet. I have read, and I am rereading, and always something new comes forth."
