Rees & Usill: They Stand Apart

Content:

"This book is a comprehensive survey of a social problem which is becoming so serious that a Royal Commission has been set up to report to Parliament. It is also a universal problem, and the evidence and conclusions contained in They Stand Apart will prove of vital interest everywhere.

"Every aspect of homosexuality - social, legal, medical and moral - is dealt with. There is no other work published in Great Britain which is so authoritative and comprehensive. The contributors are: The Viscount Hailsham, Q C; Dr W Lindesay Neustatter M D, B Sc, M R C P, who is a physician in psychiatry; H A Hammelmann M A, D Phil (Oxon), Ll D, who has made a special study of homosexuality in Europe and the United States; and the Rev Dr D S Bailey Ph D, Central Lecturer of the Church of England Moral Welfare Society.

"This important book is a document of interest to all who concern themselves with the problems of society, and it may well influence official and public opinion. It leaves no room for complacency."

"'Can nothing be done to cut out this cancer from the souls of men?' This was the question posed by a distinguished High Court Judge after he had dealt with a number of cases involving homosexuality, and in one form or another it is a question which is being asked constantly by those who are brought into direct contact with the problem. At the Buckhamshire Assizes in January 1955, Mr Justice Stable summed up this grave concern in the following terms:

'Wherever I go I find the same ugly story. I don't know what is happening to this nation. The percentage of cases of this class which we have to try today is absolutely terrifying. If this evil is allowed to spread, it will corrupt the men of the nation.'"
