Quote from this book

"In January 1973 Gay Sunshine, the San Francisco-based cultural / literary journal which I edit, initiated its now celebrated series of interviews with gay artists: eleven poets, five novelists, two playwrights, two composers, one underground film star/poet and one poet / librettist.

Although many literary magazines have featured interviews in the past few years, none of them, in my opinion, have [sic] been truly satisfactory. For instance, those in the Paris Review are much too dry and academic, and the artist as a person is rarely considered. The Gay Sunshine interviews, however, have a very different focus. As general editor of the series (and interviewer in nine cases), I have been personally responsible for the form they have taken. Along with other interviewers, I have emphasized the cultural and the personal, engendering from the artists [sic] reflections and insights into the connections between sexuality and creativity as well as in-depth discussions of literary techniques. The interviews in Volume I with Ginsberg, Rechy, Norse and Giorno are especially successful in this respect."
