Quote from this book

"It's about time. In 2005, Hollywood finally cracked open its closet door by an inch or two. But despite the surge of gay characers who appeared within the year's roster of films, Hollywood still has a long way to go before it fully opens that door to laser beams and klieg lights.

Of course, gays - known throughout most of Hollywood history as faggots, fairies and/or pansies - have appeared on screen since the dawn of the flickers as sacrificial victims to be mocked, murdered, beaten or (subtly) steered into committing suicide. With an occasional exception, gay movies were doomed for viewing by linmited audiences, since historically, the release of a gay-themed film was a sure-fire way to lose money. And even those films that were celebreated as the most successful of the genre have earned far less than their counterparts in the heterosexual (mainstream) arena."
