Plot / Content:

"There is - it cannot be denied - a section of society which includes wealthy dilettantes who are patrons of young men in various branches of art. In this story Nicholas Milestone, a young reporter on a provincial newspaper, has attracted the notice of Patrick, a man of means and influence. He introduces Nicholas into the world of smart Bohemia in London, a milieu in which Nicholas is not at all at ease. In trying to adapt himself he finds that his conscience is in conflict with his love of money. He cannot continue to enjoy the luxurious existence to which has been introduced unless he surrenders his will entirely to Patrick's. Before Nicholas fully realizes the dilemma with which he is confronted he has had a number of enlightening experience which, from the reader's point of view," are extremely entertaining.
"Such a theme is by convention usually idealized or over-dramatized; this highly amusing novel proves that it is both legitimate and possible to treat it with moral detachment and humane humour."
