Murphy: The Sergeant

Plot / Content:                              Rating: G

"The publishers of this first novel are deeply convinced that it marks the beginning of what will be a major writing career. In The Sergeant Dennis Murphy, a twenty-five year old American, has produced a finished, authoritative work of fiction - one that can stand comparison with the work of experienced writers any years the author's senior in dramatic impact and its undeviating progression to its clearly conceived goal.

"The Sergeant is an intense, beautifully controlled and tremendously effective story of the struggle for a young man's soul - the struggle between his unwilling attraction to a powerful and possessive older man and his idyllic, tender love for a girl. The boy is an American GI at a postwar Army base in France; the older man is his sergeant, who, out of his loneliness and need, tries to take possession of him; Solange is the young and attractive French girl with whom he falls in love. It is not until the relation with the sergeant comes to a head in violence that he is able to free himself for the girl; and the story is resolved in a moving scene that holds both tragedy and fulfilment."

Reviews:

According to the pre-title page, John Steinbeck wrote of this novel: ".... a remarkable book. It has none of the faults of a young first novelist, faults which took me years to overcome because I thought they were virtues. I mean verbosity, ornamentation and a lack of compactness. This book starts in one place and goes directly to its end without being distracted. I think this boy may well be a very important writer ... Most impressive is his ability to put believable people on paper and then to relate them in scenes which happen. There is a great deal of truth and beauty in this book."

"'I guess maybe it's because it's hard to know me,' said Callan. He opened the Scotch and offered it and after a pause Swanson tilted the bottle and felt the first whisky going warm down his throat. When he handed it back Callan held it for a moment on his lap. He seemed to be thinking. Then he took a long swallow.

'I been twenty-six years in the service,' he said quietly. He looked down at the cement of the patio. 'I only weighed a hundred and two pounds when I came in, sixteen years old and a hundred and two pounds. I wasn't like you. Maybe you think you got the world by the ass because you're a tall kid, pretty good-looking and all that. I don't know if you think that or not, maybe not. No, I guess you don't,' he said without looking up. 'I wouldn't like you if you did.'"
