"Cutler carries supper on a tray along the hall to Moody. A thin tube of opaque yellow plastic leads from an oxygen tank beside the bed to Moody's head. Elastic around Moody's head keeps the tube in place, so that the short ducts at the end of the tube pole up the nostrils of Moody's thin, aristocratic nose. He wears the tube much of the time - he has emphysema. Sixty-five, thin, gray, he sits propped by pillows, gazing at a television newscast. He looks neat, in a green turtleneck jersey, tan widewale corduroys, green wool socks. He thinks, sick as he is, that he is going for an outing, tonight. But then, he always prefers being dressed during business hours. Every morning, as Cutler helps him totter into the shower, he says, 'I may be needed.'" opening paragraph Secondhand booksellers |
