"Scorned by his family, defeated by society, Steve was at a major crossroads in his life. His marriage had gone sour, his hopes as a playwright dashed. "He was naked in a strange bed, one of those beds that stands in a closet all day, like a bad child. At the far end of the room, gray early light fogged a bay window edged with scraps of colored glass. Close to his face, a poster for an old Bette Davis movie was taped to the wall. He rolled onto his back. The ceiling had golden oak beams, the plaster between them rain-stained. There was a black iron chandelier with only one bulb. He had never seen any of it before."
