Plot / Content: Rating: G "The witches of the title are in fact the male members of a so-called 'drag' show - one of those odd travelling theatrical shows in which the whole cast consists of males, mostly in female costume. This particular group are known as 'The Merrie Belles' and we see them both in their capacity as performers and as individuals with private lives. The author evidently knows both his major subject and his show-business. With much penetration and deep understanding he has written a very readable novel, at times hilariously funny, but always impelling and sincere." Get down them stairs! A loud scream pierced the babel: pink clouds of powder wafted in the air, and sickly-sweet perfumes mingled with the sharp odour of perspiration. Faces were patted, eyelashes curled, carmined mouths were twisted grotesquely and flashing white teeth leered back from mirrors. There was a flurry of fans, a rustle of crinolines, a vulgar expletive and a hurried concealment of a gin bottle. Laughing gaily they swept past the boy, some pausing a moment to pinch his smooth cheeks or his small rounded bottom, which, as it was Saturday night and a good tip was in the offing, bravely bore the indignity. He liked this show and the chorus were generous and made a great fuss of him, unlike some of the bags who had been here and carried on as though they owned the the theatre. He gave an extra-wide grin, wriggled appreciatively and sped back to the stage manager " opening paragraphs Secondhand booksellers |
