"There were, during the period of the nineties, two scandals accompanied by trials in the law courts, both of which produced an immense sensation and a din of public hooting. The first of these, which was the more openly and vehemently discussed, was the Tranby Croft affair in 1891. The second, to the sequel of which is attached a remarkable literary interest, was the trial of Oscar Wilde four years later. To both of these I have a little material not generally known to contribute."
