With 20 black and white plates. A very good copy of this 19th century classic; worst defects are rubbing to corners and spine cracking. Marbled endpapers: excessive glue at hinges, which may be the result of rebinding; other slight defects and minor tears. Pages: very clean apart from some foxing of latter leaves. Interior of book suggests it has seldom been opened.
Perhaps the most comprehensive book ever written on flagellation, A History of the Rod was a Victorian best-seller, first published in 1868 and running into several editions. According to
Wikipedia, Cooper was the pseudonym of Scottish author James Herbert Glass (1824 - 1892).
Wikipedia also attributes several works of pornography, including other books on
flagellation, to publisher James Camden Hotten.
Despite the description of pornography, there is very little sexual content in this work. The 49 chapters cover a range of topics, beginning with a theoretical overview, moving on to consider the practice among Jews, Romans and various Christian orders (the last taking up about 20 chapters), then as punishment, as possible therapy and in various settings abroad, before returning to discuss various styles of corporal punishment in the home and at school. The final chapters touch on the "boudoir", the notorious publication The Rodiad and various instruments used in flagellation.
